So I wrote a (not so) recent diary that made the Wreck List. One turn of phrase that seemed to strike with resonance was “Democratic Voltron”. I felt pretty good about that when I was writing it so that made me happy. After a small bit of encouragement, I have decided to expand upon the concept and the argument it supports.
First, a quick summary of Voltron is in order. Voltron is a super robot made up of component robots that each have their own strengths and powers separate from the group. The cool thing about Voltron is that the heros all have to work together as part of the Voltron whole. One robot is the head, another the right arm, et. cetera. Thus the phrase “forming like Voltron”.
Anyway, here is the comment in context of the summation of the previous diary.
The task ahead is monumental.
The truth is that we will need to build a big conference table through the debates and the primaries. Every one of us can find several candidates that fit different parts of Democratic Voltron. My hope for the process is that we win by building each other up instead of running a gauntlet just to lose the general by sheer exhaustion.
We need anger and excitement. We need optimism and pessimism. We need thinkers and we need fighters. This needs to be a team game. And we need to pay attention to the adults in the room.
A Bit More About the Metaphor
The main argument I was making in the previous diary was that the Democratic presidential candidates have a chance to create a great debate around the platform going into November 2020. If you like, each candidate has a chance to claim the part of the head, heart, leg, et cetera. So the question becomes who plays each part?
It’s an interesting proposition so I will offer some suggestions for each part. Feel free to weigh in with your own arguments.
The Right Arm
Kamala Harris
Amy Klobuchar
Bernie Sanders
The Left Arm
Kirsten Gillibrand
Pete Buttigieg
The Right Leg
Corey Booker
Beto O’Rourke
The Left Leg
Jay Inslee
The Head
Elizabeth Warren
Julian Castro
